Mailchimp List ID: How to Find Your Audience ID

Your Mailchimp List ID is the unique identifier that tells the Contact Form 7 Mailchimp Extension exactly which audience should receive your form submissions. In other words, if you have multiple audiences in your Mailchimp account, the Mailchimp List ID ensures submissions land in the right one.

Additionally, Mailchimp renamed “List ID” to “Audience ID” in 2019. However, both terms refer to the same thing — the unique string that identifies a subscriber list. The plugin settings, the Mailchimp API, and most developer documentation still use the original term “List ID.” As a result, this guide uses both terms interchangeably.

Furthermore, while the plugin’s dropdown menu lets you select audiences by name, entering the Mailchimp List ID directly gives you precise control. This is especially useful for agencies managing multiple clients or businesses with dozens of audiences where scrolling through a dropdown becomes impractical.

Where to Find Your Mailchimp List ID

Your Mailchimp List ID is located in the audience settings area. Specifically, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to Mailchimp at mailchimp.com.
  2. Click Audience in the left navigation menu.
  3. Select the audience you want to connect — if you have more than one audience, use the “Current audience” dropdown at the top to switch.
  4. Click Settings from the “Manage Audience” dropdown menu.
  5. Click Audience name and defaults — the Mailchimp List ID (labeled “Audience ID”) is displayed on this settings page.

In addition, there is an alternative path: click “Settings” in the audience sidebar, then scroll down to find the Audience ID field. The ID appears in both locations.

What a Mailchimp List ID Looks Like

A Mailchimp List ID is a 10-character alphanumeric string that looks like this:

a1b2c3d4e5

Specifically, it contains exactly 10 characters — a mix of lowercase letters and numbers. Every audience in your Mailchimp account has its own unique ID. In fact, even if two audiences have identical names, their List IDs are always different.

Moreover, the Mailchimp List ID never changes. You can rename an audience, change its settings, or modify its merge fields, and the List ID remains the same. Consequently, once you enter it into the Contact Form 7 Mailchimp Extension, you never need to update it unless you delete and recreate the audience.

Entering the Mailchimp List ID in WordPress

After copying your Mailchimp List ID from the audience settings page, follow these steps:

  1. Open your WordPress admin and navigate to Contact > Contact Forms.
  2. Edit the form you want to connect to Mailchimp.
  3. Click the Mailchimp tab in the form editor.
  4. Make sure your Mailchimp API key is already entered and validated.
  5. Enter the List ID in the List ID field — this overrides the dropdown selection and targets the exact audience you specified.
  6. Click Save and submit a test entry to verify.

As a result, every form submission goes directly to the audience matching that Mailchimp List ID, regardless of what the dropdown shows.

When to Use the Mailchimp List ID

The dropdown audience selector works fine for most WordPress sites. However, there are situations where entering the Mailchimp List ID directly is the better approach:

  • Multiple accounts — if you manage several Mailchimp accounts for different clients, using List IDs eliminates confusion between audiences with similar names across accounts.
  • Many audiences — accounts with dozens of audiences make the dropdown unwieldy. Pasting the exact List ID is faster and more reliable.
  • Programmatic setup — if you are configuring forms via code or importing settings, the List ID is the unambiguous identifier that always works.
  • Debugging — when troubleshooting why subscribers are not appearing in the expected audience, comparing the List ID in the plugin with the List ID in Mailchimp confirms the connection is correct.

In short, the Mailchimp List ID is the definitive way to specify which audience receives your form submissions.

Mailchimp List ID vs Audience ID

In 2019, Mailchimp rebranded “Lists” to “Audiences” across their entire platform. However, the API and most integrations still use the original term. Specifically:

  • Mailchimp dashboard — shows “Audience ID”
  • Mailchimp API — uses list_id in every endpoint
  • WordPress plugins — most still say “List ID” including the CF7 Mailchimp Extension
  • Developer documentation — references list_id throughout

Consequently, do not be confused by the different labels. Whether you see “List ID” or “Audience ID,” it is the same 10-character string.

Common Mailchimp List ID Issues

List ID not accepted

If the plugin rejects your Mailchimp List ID, check for trailing spaces or partial selections. Specifically, the ID must be exactly 10 characters. Copy it directly from the Mailchimp audience settings page and paste without modifications.

Subscribers going to the wrong audience

This happens when the dropdown selection and the List ID field conflict. In particular, if you are using the List ID field, make sure the dropdown matches or is left at its default. The List ID field takes priority over the dropdown selection.

List ID changed after audience deletion

If you deleted an audience and recreated one with the same name, it gets a new Mailchimp List ID. In fact, Mailchimp never reuses List IDs. Update the List ID in your plugin settings to match the new audience.

Mailchimp List ID vs Campaign Monitor List ID

If you have used the Contact Form 7 Campaign Monitor Extension, you may be familiar with Campaign Monitor’s List ID. Similarly, both serve the same purpose — uniquely identifying a subscriber list.

However, the format is different. Mailchimp List IDs are 10 characters, while Campaign Monitor List IDs are 32 characters. Both systems use the ID as a permanent, unchanging identifier for each list.
